Enough- Jeff Tweedy
Jeff Tweedy recently announced a new triple solo LP called Twilight Override, and shared 4 of its songs. While all of these songs are great new additions to the Tweedy solo catalogue and indicate that we're likely in for something special here, "Enough" is the clear highlight of the collection. Over cowbell, a muscular bassline, and some jangly guitar strums, the music congeals into an infectious progression with Tweedy raspy register delivering a quick verse before bursting into the song's anthemic hook.
Each subsequent iteration of the hook is slightly tweaked, embellishing the song's meaning with clever yet heartfelt turns of phrase that peak the second time around "Is your heart tired?/Don't lie/Is your heart hiding/From your fire?". The music locks into a rollicking groove that's far snappier than what we're used to from Tweedy, but these aren't commercially viable concessions so much as a manifestation of his pure pop impulses bleeding through his alt-country sweet-spot in a far particularly striking and direct way.
Within the last 30 seconds, the vocals dissipate to make room for an immensely expressive guitar solo coda set against the percussive backdrop, which is tastefully restrained on this recording, but could easily be expanded to a compelling degree live. While the execution lives up to the promise of succinct pop precision, "Enough" still retains the ramshackle, lived in sensibility that animates all of Tweedy's best work. Hopefully the remainder of TO lives up to the promise of these first 4 songs, but even if it doesn't, what we have here still makes for an excellent EP.
